Kids Club Frogging Outing

Frogging at the Karkloof Conservancy near Howick

Great fun was had on the 24th January 2015 when Kids Club took 22 kids to the Karkloof Conservancy with our frog expert – Charleen. We met at the office and once we had had a bite to eat set off to find FROGS! It was a bit early for frogs, so once we had familiarized ourselves with the wetland we tried to sit and be quiet waiting for the frogs to wake up… But it was not to be! The kids could not sit still and once one of them had broken the ‘mud’ it was a free for all – everyone jumped into the thick, black nutritious mud that is associated with wetlands. Love it!

Lost-in-the-reedsMud-fun

A few brave wetland warriors went on a great trek through the reeds around the edge of the dam with spotlights – a reed buck was rudely disturbed and geese, ducks and shelduck flew off shouting their indignation. We saw a lovely big flock of Spurwing geese, Egyptian Geese, South African Shelduck (an endemic species), pied kingfisher and I am sure I heard cranes as they flew around the dam before settling in the reeds to roost.I cannot be certain which it was tho’.

painted reed frog

Once darkness had set in the frogs started calling to their mates. They are so good at throwing their sound  to confuse predators as to their location, it took us a while to find them. Painted reed frogs love hiding in the meilies – (that’s not where they are supposed to be!). We found a common river frog and of course the guttural toad jumping everywhere.

One of the highlights of the evening were the fire flies that came out to give us a delightful show with their twinkling lights – so special.

The Karkloof Conservation Centre is on the Karkloof Road past the Karkloof Country Club, situated on private land. The office is open weekdays from 8:00 to 16:00. There are 2 hides that the general public can visit to go birding. The wetland is conserved for the 3 species of crane as a safe haven to breed in. There is an honesty box at the centre where you pay your money over week-ends. The money goes towards maintenance of the facility and to the farm schools they support.

Mary explains the nesting process to our Kids, whilst watching a Loggerhead Turtle lay her eggs

Annual Kids Club inter-active Educational Outing –   The purpose was to observe and learn about nesting turtles and the value and importance of turtles as a species. Ardent Kids Club supporter Mary Pieters led the activities aimed at educating our kids on the importance of marine conservation and marine research projects. The weekend programme included exploring the marine life inhabiting both rocky and sandy shores and the effects and importance of the tides and wind on these areas. Four families and eight children participated in the programme. A huge “thank you” to those parents, as without their support and participation, our little future eco-tourists would not be taking those first steps towards taking responsibility for the environment!

The African Wild Dog is Southern Africa’s most endangered carnivore…

EWT has confirmed that “the African Wild Dog is southern Africa’s most endangered carnivore, with less than 450 Wild Dogs left in South Africa and approximately 35 left in the Waterberg. This is the only area where dogs have been surviving outside of protected areas in South Africa and every dog and pack is valuable. If we need to save them one at a time, then we will” remarked Kelly Marnewick, Programme Manager: EWT Carnivore Conservation Programme.

African Wild Dogs are protected in terms of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act 10 of 2004) and the Threatened or Protected Species Regulations of 2007 (ToPS). They are categorised as Endangered by the IUCN. The activities of hunting or shooting ToPS listed species require a permit from the relevant conservation authority, and where no permits have been issued for such activities, it is deemed a crime.

Ezemvelo Kids Club members are being educated about this endangered species. One of our young members sent us these photos taken in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park recently.

Kids Club Outing to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

Our Kids had an amazing weekend experience, tracking Wild dog and learning to interpret the signs and noises of the “wild”. We were guided by the EWT Wild Dog Research unit and hosted by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Di took along the portable specimen museum  – nests, seeds, bones, poo, eggs, etc, etc…!!! There was plenty of oppotunity to study spoor and animal behaviour whilst on our three game drives, whilst observing 4 of the Big Five – one highlight was a clear view of a black rhino browsing in the afternoon sunlight; three lion feasting on a buffalo carcass;  Bateleurs and Vultures; African Hoepoes and Scimitur Bills; Cape Robins and Chagras and a brief glimpse of Wild dogs!

James shared his photos with us!
